The Recycled Instruments Orchestra of Cateura comes from Cateura, a community near Asunción, Paraguay, where a large landfill became the unlikely starting point for an extraordinary musical story.
When a music program in the community had more students than instruments, teachers and local recyclers began creating instruments from materials recovered from the landfill. Violins, cellos, guitars, percussion instruments and more were handcrafted from objects that might otherwise have been discarded.
The result? Instruments that look remarkable, sound beautiful and have carried the orchestra’s music far beyond Cateura.
The orchestra’s story attracted international attention after a video about the group went viral. Since then, the musicians have performed in countries around the world and on major stages, including appearances with Metallica and Megadeth.
Their story also became the subject of the documentary Landfill Harmonic, which follows the orchestra and its music director, Favio Chávez, and explores the connection between music, creativity, community and the environment.
It’s a story about taking what is available and creating something extraordinary.
