Winter Holiday Fair
On Wednesday, November 18th at 7pm Marin Sanitary Service will hold its second-annual zero waste winter holiday fair! We had such a fun time hosting everyone at our recycling facility last year, and to keep everyone safe we will be doing a virtual event!
We will host a recycling center tour, and a Q&A about how to reduce waste during the holiday season. We also will have zero waste vendors giving exclusive discount codes for people that attend the event, and some of them will be available to answer questions at our live online event!
Update:

Anato
Product type: Regenerative skincare
Based in: Santa Cruz
How did you get started on zero waste?
Celine, the founder of Anato, became mesmerized by the power of plants early on. Determined to uncover the best way to feed the world sustainably, Celine set off to college to study ethnobotany at Cornell. She developed a passion for perennial crops and agroforestry systems due to their ability to provide food and an array of other ecosystem services. Celine pursued a Masters at Oxford and ended up undertaking her fieldwork on the island of Hawai’i to study indigenous agroforestry systems and cutting edge forest restoration practices.
Digging deeper into food issues, Celine soon became aware of the issue of plastic pollution and waste in general. This led her to launch the non-profit Plastic Tides with two undergrad classmates in 2014. The team combines adventure & science to tackle ocean plastic pollution via Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) expeditions & story-telling.ANATO melds Celine’s lifelong journey concocting herbal remedies and skincare, her passion for truly regenerative agricultural practices and her experience at Plastic Tides to offer solutions to climate change via consumer products that nurture our bodies and the planet that sustains us.

How did you get started on zero waste?
Our philosophy has become a holistic approach towards zero waste. Understanding that the waste we create are clues to the bigger picture of our depleted climate, oceans, and soil health. As individuals we do have the power to conserve our water, energy, and what we buy, but we also must hold big corporations that put profits over people and environment accountable and support policy to uphold those values and actions.
Waste comes in many forms, the plastic from our food, using our cars when we could walk or bike, the gas and electric energy we use in our homes, the food waste, the food scraps that are put in our landfill, single use disposables and everything else we buy, and the contamination that happens when we don’t pay attention to what bin our waste belongs.
Since 2004 we have been a deep green and zero waste company. Our shop is built of reclaimed wood and furniture. Our textiles good are designed with the zero-waste philosophy – are scraps are always made into something else. We seek out only the most natural and highest quality goods that ship to us using no plastic. We ship using no plastic and only use shipping materials that are post-consumer paper. Our minimal waste is properly recycled and composted. Our lighting (LED) is only used when necessary, and we are an education hub for what is acceptable in our local refuse bins.

How did you get started on zero waste?
I have always been a thrift store junkie, I think it was the scene from Pretty in Pink where Molly Ringwald makes her own prom dress from 2 thrifted gowns that her Father buys for her that sealed the deal for me. I love the thrill of the hunt and people get rid of such good things, I also love a good price and am a huge fan of mid-century style.
I am a graphic designer and self-taught seamstress based in San Rafael, I have always been interested in zero waste and sustainability. I remember visiting New York City for the first time when I was 18, it happened to be a trash collection night when we first got there, I was unnerved by the amount of trash piled up on the sidewalks and have never forgotten it. I am a frequent rescuer of furniture on the side of the road, and my pinterest board of diy upcycle projects is extensive. My latest project – handbags out of vintage fabrics – is aligned with what I value, giving a beautiful old item a new life.

Samudra Skin
Product type: Skincare and beauty
Based in: Oakland
How did you get started on zero waste?
“Samudra was founded by ocean advocate Shilpi Chhotray, after discovering the healing effect seaweed had on her dry skin and eczema. Armed with a unique expertise in marine conservation and social responsibility, she created a skincare line that blends ecological integrity with personal wellness.I began noticing how much is produced and packaged in single-use products that were also chemically-intensive. For the sake of my personal well-being and for that of our planet, I wanted to live much more minimally. My work with Break Free From Plastic has opened my eyes to a global perspective and advocating for systems change and corporate accountability. At the personal level, I continue to make a lot of adjustments like making my own detergents and household cleaners.” – Shilpi Chhotray, Founder

How did you get started on zero waste?
As a sewing business we have been accumulating lots of scrap and overstock fabrics for many years, and in partnership with other local businesses we have been able to keep many other used materials out of the landfill – like banners, billboards, decommissioned fire hose and scrap leather. All those materials deserve another life and make for truly unique personal gifts as well as corporate merchandise.
